This is the second of a series of four posts featuring the research of Andrew Hesketh into participants in the Great War with Abergele connections. As a mark of respect, we’re publishing the thousand-plus list of names in installments. Today we’re listing those from the outskirts of Abergele. As Andrew Hesketh says: “The ones ‘farther afield’ are a real conundrum. Llanddulas, Rhyd y Foel, Betws yn Rhos, St. George and Towyn were, at the time, effectively regarded as part of the ‘wider’ Abergele. The the pull of the market and the close links between the agricultural communities in particular meant that blokes from as far away as Llanelian and Dolwen (which today are in the gravitational orbit of Colwyn Bay) were, at the time, regarded as part of the wider Abergele community. So was Llanfair TH and Llanefydd, but I decided early on to draw a line there because the ‘pull’ of Denbigh and Llanrwst begins to kick in at those places). I decided therefore, that my research should reflect what was seen and regarded as Abergele and district in 1914, not what it would appear to be in 2014.”

My father served in the Army in France in WW1. He was wounded but survived the War. His parents lived in The Square, near Ty Gwyn Farm, Towyn, and he lived in Manchester Terrace near by. I have tried to get more details of his War record without success and began to think his record had been destroyed in WW2. Your entry is the first hopefull sign I have come across. Do you have any further information or advice where I could try next?
Charles – apologies for the late reply. I will help in any way I can. Who is your grandfather on the above list?
Hi. It was my father who was in WW1. His name was Thomas Charles Williams. He was born in Rhyl on 31 October 1884. He was in the Army, went to France, was injured and brought back. Any help would be appreciated.
Charles, I’m sorry but I have virtually nothing in my research. As you say, his records have not survived. Apart from the fact that he served with one of the Service Battalions of the RWF, the only additional fact I have to add is that he was a postal worker working out of Colwyn Bay Post Office when he joined the army. Do you, by any chance know of the whereabouts of his medals? They would have a vital clue. He may have been Corporal 24801, but this is a guess that only the medals would solve. May I ask, was his father named David?
The postal worker aspect fits with what I know. He worked installing telephone wires and poles then in the 1920’S and 1930’s erected electricity pylons in various parts of the country. I have no info of his medals and wouldn’t know how to get it. His father was Moses Williams. Much appreciate your help.
That’s helpful. Son of Moses and Edith, younger brother of John, living at 16, Windsor Street, Rhyl, in 1901? May I ask if his wife was Charlotte Bennett? It all helps me narrow my search
I will happily continue to look, but unfortunately his name is quite a common one and trying to figure out which one is him is quite difficult without a little extra clue to break the challenge. The medals would have provided a detail that would have resolved this but, unfortunately, if you have no idea where they went we will have to go a long way round.
Are there any other details about his military career, no matter how apparently trivial or speculative, you can provide? May I also ask if you know anything more about his wounding (when, where, how etc.), and specifically whether or not he was discharged as a result? Did he ever mention regiments, places, names, locations? Are there any other details about his military career, no matter how apparently trivial or speculative, you can provide? I will do my best to find out what I can if I can.
I am happy to continue this via email if you wish and Gareth (site owner) will be able to provide my contact details.
Yes, you are on the right track as regards his father, mother, address in in Rhyl. Also Charlotte Bennett was his first wife. The only other info I recall his telling me was that he was injured in France. Shrapnel wound in the back of his neck. Also, whilst there he might have ridden a motorbike – a messenger?. When he got home, Charlotte was associating with another man and Tom chased him out of the house with his rifle and bayonet. The police were called and frog marched him away. No other info I’m afraid.
Thanks Charles. He married Charlotte (from Wexford, Ireland) in 1908. A daughter, Marjorie, was born the following year in Rhuddlan. In 1911 the three were living at 11 St Johns St, Kates Hill, Dudley, where he was a Linesman Inspector for the National Telephone Company. Then I lose him until he appears in a list of men who had volunteered in the Abergele and Pensarn Visitor on 3 July 1915. This states his battalion as a service battalion of the RWF. It’s very interesting that you mention motorbikes. This, with his telephone and postal background, made him a perfect choice as a battalion signaller, so an association with motorbikes would fit.
But, at that point, I’m stuck again. I can find no suitable candidate in the medal rolls or Silver War Badge lists (if he was discharged from his wound). It is possible he transferred to the Royal Engineers, where his skills were more applicable (and his chances of playing with motorbikes would be increased). I will have a scout through their records but, to be honest, I would be surprised if I can take this further without some other clue.
Brilliant work. More than I ever knew. Many thanks.
Hi Andrew,
I worked with Jack Padgett Davies at Slaters of Abergele during the 1960-70’s.
He came from llandulas and he used to tell us about his experience at the Battle Of Jutland in WW1. Do yoi know anything more about him?
