Photo of 1947 Christmas Pantomime at Abergele Sanitorium
I received this fabulous photo from Mrs Gunta Binks. She writes:
“Thought this might be of interest to you, I am going through papers of my late Mother who sadly passed away in September 2014 two weeks short of her 90th birthday. On the back is written Christmas 1947 Manchester Children’s Abergele Sanatorium, North Wales, Pantomime. My mother’s name was Erna Darzins (Latvian refugee, who would have been 23 in 1947)) she is the lady at the back right hand side with the lion on her head! She talked fondly of her time in Abergele and no doubt the Welsh air did her good.”

New York Terrace, Abergele
Norman Williams recently enquired if anyone could help him to locate Eurog House, New York Terrace, Abergele. Two of his late relatives, Mary Roberts (nee Williams) and her husband, Owen Roberts, had lived there prior to their both dying in early 1901 (see The Old Pubs, Inns & Taverns of Abergele in the 1800’s). Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find anything marked on any of the surviving terrace buildings to indicate which it might have been. There again, it’s not unknown for house names to change down the years either.
There was, however, another adjacent terrace which no longer exists (see the 1872 map section above). That was called New York Street and comprised 10 properties, whereas New York Terrace had only 7 properties originally. The Terrace and Street, like Roche House which faced them, were all built by John Jones prior to 1861.
The above postcard shows Roche House on the extreme left. The right side of the same image shows the gable end of the first/last of the terraced houses in New York Street with the access just visible beyond.
Can any of our readers, perhaps with a more intimate knowledge of the area, shed any light on Norman’s query? My only other thought would be for him to contact the Local Archives in Lloyd Street, Llandudno to see if the 1900 Rates Books might clarify matters. I’ve put their contact details on the Pubs, Inns & Taverns page which has Norman’s original enquiry.
Nigel Hilton.

I’ve been invited by the Emrys ap Iwan Society to present a lecture in Welsh about this Abergele Post website and my memories of growing up in Abergele in the 60s and 70s. It’s on Friday 21 November at 7.30pm at Mynydd Seion Chapel Vestry. It’s a visual presentation with lots of photos and images of the town. I’ll look back at some of the town’s characters and happenings. There is no simultaneous translation but, if you’re a Welsh speaker or have any understanding of Welsh, you’ll be made most welcome.

Emyr ac Elwyn
Do you remember Emyr ac Elwyn?
They were a duo who used to perform at Nosweithiau Lawen and concerts all along the north Wales coast in the 1960s. They opened a record shop in Colwyn Bay in the 70s. They came from an era of duos; Iola a Nia were Abergele’s most famous.
These 45rpm EP records were often displayed for sale in the window of Jenkins shop, between the George and Dragon pub and Hywel the Barber’s.
Deryl Ann Mahon, whom I knew as Deryl Roberts at Ysgol Glan Morfa, wrote about Emyr ac Elwyn’s song “Sibrwd Cariad”. Her father wrote this song. Deryl picks up the story:
… “Dad gave them the song which he’d come up with on piano … He was a good pianist ! he played the piano for them on this track … They wrote lyrics … I’m trying to find a copy that dad played on in particular as I think the one we had has been mislayed years ago – long shot I know ! Searched internet .. No luck !”
I haven’t found a copy of the record, but here’s a photo of the cover. If you can help Deryl find the vinyl, please use the Comments section below.

100 years ago today at Mons
On 23 August 1914 at Mons, Belgium, Captain Walton Mellor, of Tanybryn, Abergele’s was killed.
Walton was the son of Colonel John Edwin Mellor of Tan-y-Bryn Abergele.
He was the first WWI death of a soldier from Abergele.

Here is a full account of Walton Mellor’s story now by Andrew Hesketh:
The elder son of Colonel John Edward Mellor of Tan-y-Bryn, Abergele, Walton Mellor was born on the 27th of June 1878 and educated at Rossall School. He joined the Lancashire Fusiliers from the Militia in December 1899, becoming Lieutenant in May 1900 and Captain in June 1905. He served in South Africa (the Boer War) in the Transvaal, Natal, the action at Laing’s Nek and in the Orange River Colony. From January 1901 to May 1902, in the Transvaal, he acted as Railway Staff Officer. He was awarded the Queen’s Medal with 4 clasps and the King’s Medal with two clasps. In 1908 he transferred to the Royal Irish Regiment. Between 1910 and 1914 he was in charge of a company of cadets at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, returning to the Royal Irish full time in January 1914. He married Kathleen Geraldine Helen Wellesley 31 March 1910. Her Great Grandfather’s brother was Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington of Peninsular War and Waterloo fame, a fact that undoubtedly Walton would have mentioned from time to time in the Officer’s mess. They had a daughter, named Kathleen Florence, who was born in 1911. Walton was killed in action, Battle of Mons, 23 August 1914.
“The Royal Irish had just before sent up two companies to support us in the centre … and to cover the retirement of B Company. It was with this lot that I saw Captain Mellor of the Royal Irish killed. I was by his side talking to him about the position when a shell exploded close above our heads and a splinter went right through his head. This alarmed his men very much for when I went back to the CO to tell him what had happened I heard the men at the other end of his Coy talking about the Captain being killed.” Lt. Woolcombe, Adjutant of the 4th Middlesex.
Walton’s widow, Kathleen, wasted little time in planning a lasting memorial. A Vestry meeting was held at the parish church of St. Michael’s on 14 January 1915 at which the members considered the design and wording of tablet that Kathleen had proposed. The Vestry meeting approved both aspects and submitted an application to the Chancellor of the Diocese of St. Asaph on 12 February 1915 for a Faculty to erect the memorial. The Faculty was duly granted and in due course the memorial was erected and unveiled by the Dean of St. Asaph to a packed church on Sunday 27 June 1915. Hung on the north aisle wall, directly opposite the entrance from the porch, the memorial remains one of the most noticeable in the church. Walton Mellor left a 3 year old daughter and a grieving wife. Kathleen was to live a long life, spending 68 years as a widow. She died on 9 December 1982, having reached the age of 100.
Walton lies in Plot II. A. 3., St. Symphorien Military Cemetery, Mons, Hainaut, Belgium.
He is not forgotten

Emrys ap Iwan students remember WWI and Abergele in 1914
Cofia Abergele Remembers.
Recording lists of the names of some of the people from Abergele and those with links to the town who took part in WWI was a challenge that Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan students relished as one of the school’s community projects to remember 100 years since the Great War.
Head Lee Cummins, head of sixth form John Seymour, music department and technicians and of course the students rose to the occasion, as you can hear in Sophie Peake’s recording:
Apart from Sophie’s, there are another 17 recordings. The first live performance, thanks to Abergele Town Council’s Delyth MacRae, is after the St Michael’s Vigil on 4 August 2014.
The participants’ names were researched by historian Andrew Hesketh with audio post production by AbergelePost.com’s Gareth Morlais.
Here’s a list of students who made the recordings:
Jordan Harwood
Chloe Merrison
Anna Humphreys
Teigan Thompson
Scott Carney
Alice Naylor
Chantalle Cox
Eleanor Lloyd
Iwan Coghlan
Cian Hanna
Mike White
Ben Stone
Sophie Peake
Laurie Wilson
Lara Wagstaff
Abbey Jacklin
Jamie Edwards
You can see some of the students below making their recordings using Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan’s Music Department studio. What’s poignant is that many of those who went to war a hundred years ago were a similar age to the young people whose voices you can hear listing the names. AbergelePost.com is grateful to these students for paying their respects.
WWI participants from Abergele
World War 1 began on 28 July 1914.
This is the final installment of the series of pages of names of those people who played their part in the Great War from Abergele and surrounding areas and people from beyond Wales with Abergele connections. This whole list has been researched by Andrew Hesketh.
The Regiment, where shown, is usually the last known regiment of the 1914-1919 period. When the main spell of experience of service personnel has been with a former regiment, this is shown instead.

Abergele Urban, Abergele Rural and WWI
Did you know that more than a thousand participants in World War 1 had Abergele connections? They were people from Abergele, nearby surrounding areas, and people from beyond Wales with Abergele connections. The list has been researched by Andrew Hesketh, who has lived in Abergele since the turn of the millennium and is a teacher in Conwy.
This is one of a series of pages on AbergelePost.com which publishes the names in serialised form, ending up on 28 July – 100 years after the beginning of WWI.
The Regiment, where shown, is usually the last known regiment of the 1914-1919 period. When the principal experience of service personnel has been with a former regiment, this is shown instead.
I asked Andrew Hesketh about the difference between Abergele Urban and Abergele Rural. He explains:
“It refers to the demarcation between the Urban and Rural authorities which in reality seem surprisingly blurred and really only became significant from 1916 following the introduction of conscription.
“Depending on whether you were Urban or Rural there was a different appeals tribunal. In very generalised terms, the ‘rural’ is areas beyond the confines of what today might be regarded as the actual town of Abergele but within the wider district, i.e Penyffordd Cottages, Moelfre, Foryd.
“Confusingly though, on my listing one man from Moelfre may be listed as such, and another be listed as Abergele Rural, despite being from Moelfre.”
So here is the third installment of Andrew Hesketh’s list of WWI participants from the Abergele Rural area:

Llanfair TH charity cyclists reached Paris
Llion Griffiths and Clive Williams of Llanfair TH have sucessfully completed their 450 mile journey to Paris. They did it to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity. You can read the background here, along with Justin Hinchliffe’s updates in the comments.
Here’s Justin’s final entry on 16 July:
“JOB DONE!! Arrived here in Paris at around 7pm. 14 hours on the bike today so a long last day, but well worth it! Off out now for some well-deserved cool beer and some food. Going to do some sightseeing tomorrow then make our way back to Wales. . . . .by VAN! Many thanks to all who have donated to our challenge. It’s been tough, but worth it!”
Many congratulations to the cyclists.
